Campus Visit Notes for Hartwick College

Visit Description:

My son and I visited Hartwick College yesterday during their fall open house. First, the students, faculty and staff are to be commended for doing an outstanding job. The open house was well run and everyone clearly worked hard at it. We felt very welcome and enjoyed our visit.

After check in we visited display tables for academic departments and staff areas such as housing, technology and student services etc. During this time we had the opportunity to talk with students, professors, and staff employees all of whom were very helpful and knowledgeable. We were especially impressed with the Hartwick students. Everyone was very friendly, enthusiastic about their school and clearly happy to be there. It should be noted a group of young women were playing their flutes at check in - very nice!

After visiting the tables the president and admissions talked to the visitors in an auditorium. Both have excellent remarks that were informative but did not labor on too long.

Admissions was then prepared with a tremendous number of students ready to give tours. This allowed for small tours which was clearly by design. We definitely got the impression during all parts of our visit that Hartwick is about the individual. Our tour guide did a great job highlighting the important areas without making it drag on. Each area was very nice. I didn't think the school was lacking anything. It had "just enough" for a small college and although it was a rainy day, the school was very pretty so I can only imagine how pretty it is in the sunshine. It is a school surrounded by hills of gorgeous fall tress right now.

After the tour we were escorted to lunch in the dining hall. The food was delicious with a wide variety of selections. The dining hall has windows on two walls that look out over the beautiful trees/hills. I couldn't help but think this is the next renovation for the school. There is nothing wrong with the dining by any means but with new windows they could capitalize better on the natural beauty that surrounds the school. A renovated and updated dining hall would add that little something extra to a lovely campus. Only because I am into design in my opinion it needs new flooring, lighting, windows, general updates etc.

Overall, we left with a very good impression of Hartwick College. It is a special place and if it is your student's match school they will surely have a wonderful experience there. The school is personal, individual, and a great learning community. The student's enthusiasm for their school was infectious and I met a lot of upward, "neat", talented, smart, and all around great young adults during the visit. Meeting Hartwick's students made me feel hopeful and positive about our country's future.

My son is only a junior in high school and we are early in our college search process but if you are looking for a small LAC, in a beautiful setting with a nice campus vibe and many terrific students, Hartwick College is worth a look.
