Visit Activities:

Information Session: Yes - Extremely simple. 10 minutes hitting the basics, with plenty of questions from the audience. The admissions rep seemed nice enough, but not a lot of "song and dance" in comparison to others

Campus Tour: Yes - "Matt" was excellent: entertaining, knowledgeable, and funny. As a transfer student, he was clearly happy with his choice.

Classroom Visit: Yes - Spontaneously observed the Foundational Drawing class.

Campus Visit Notes for Loyola Marymount University

Visit Description:

Wow - shot to the top. With an interested in classical art and biology, and a passion for discussion based classes, we knew this was a school that might be a good fit. The college is drop dead gorgeous and well kept, with very friendly staff throughout. The information presentation would more accurately called a "question and answer" session: most of the valuable information came from questions posed by the audience. Each response made us like the school more, but it was quite a difference in style from the song and dance that most colleges present. The tour guide was outstanding: sincerely over the top excited about his choice to transfer from back East to LMU. Beautiful buildings - well kept - expansive laws - just outstanding campus. I always look at the books in my field - they appeared both practical and engaging. We were impressed with the attitude toward spirituality: "It's a presence, not a pressure". Responses to questions suggested a welcoming and inclusive environment. We did not have an appt to talk to the art department, but one prof requested her grad student take us around, which she did happily. When we returned to the drawing and painting area, another professor saw us, invited us into her office, and spent a half hour brainstorming with our daughter and blowing her away with her practical suggestions. We were invited to participate/observe the foundational drawing class, given several helpful phone numbers for professors in other departments, etc. Very excited to hear about figurative realism focus (e.g. think Michelangelo's David) which is our daughter's passion. Extremely impressive school - rocketed to top choice. We are also aware that they give more merit aide than many top tier schools.

Hotel/Lodging Recommendations or Comments:

Stayed at the Seabreeze Motel, a simple but well placed motel about 15 minutes away. Clean, neat, and reasonably priced although not fancy - we will stay there again!

Dining/Restaurant Recommendations or Comments:

Enterprise Fish Company - excellent happy hour "snacks"
