Visit Activities:

Campus Tour: Yes - There are 4 undergraduate students leading tours and you can choose your tour guide. The tour only stops at like 6 different places, so you would actually see more of the campus by walking by yourself

Campus:

Friendliness/Courtesy of Students:
5 - Excellent
5 - Excellent
Since I visited during summer, I only met the tour guides and a few other people. They seem very friendly and willing to help point you in the right direction if you are lost.

Friendliness/Courtesy of Staff:
4 - Very Good
4 - Very Good
The only staff I met was a librarian and a student who was working at some building that I went in to ask directions.

Appearance of Campus:
3 - Good

Nothing exciting. There are lots of trees and the library is very distinctive, but the other buildings are boring. There is a lot of construction the tour guides say UC stands for Under Construction lol

Building/Facilities Maintenance/Cleanliness:
4 - Very Good
4 - Very Good
See above. I didn't notice if it was clean or not, so that must mean it was not really filthy or anything.

Dormitories:

The campus tour did not include looking into dorms. I did pass a Sixth College dorm, which looked just like a log cabin you use for summer camp. cute :)

Security/Safety:
5 - Excellent
5 - Excellent
They have a campus escort service at night if you don't feel comfortable walking across campus alone. Also La Jolla is an upper class, generally very safe environment, so there are few problems

Overall Campus Impression:
4 - Very Good
4 - Very Good
The campus wasn't beautiful or anything, but my tour guide really inspired me to apply! She talked in depth about everything from pranks to play on people to, more seriously, the 6 college system

Off-Campus:

Area Immediately Around Campus:
3 - Good
3 - Good
I heard the campus is right next to a beach! The only bad thing is that the highway is really close to the campus, and I am not a fan of highways.

City/Town/Community:
5 - Excellent

La Jolla is beautiful and rich. San Diego has so much to do and is easy to get around. The weather is perfect!

Campus Visit Notes for University of California, San Diego

Visit Description:

I visited UCSD with the idea that I probably wasn't going to apply there (since it it's out of state for me). I came away thinking I am probably going to apply there now.

It was kind of hard to find the place where the tours started, but that was good in a way b/c I got to see more of campus than I did on the tour. My tour guide was really helpful and answered all of the questions we had. She also told us little things like where to buy notes for class, the different festivals and activities on campus, and random other tidbits that you would not know from reading guidebooks. She gave us a complete introduction to each of the 6 colleges and their distinctive personalities, which really convinced me to apply to UCSD.

The campus tour shows you barely any of the campus. If you really want to make the most of your tour, be sure to explore on your own a little bit before or after the tour.

Dining/Restaurant Recommendations or Comments:

In downtown San Diego:
- Blue Ginger (Chinese)
- Sammy's (pizza)
- any of the seafood places right by the waterfront
- my tour guide said the restaurant by the LGBT center was good

Other Comments (Transportation, local attractions, parking, etc.):

Definitely visit San Diego while you are there if you can. Visitor's parking is a bit confusing- be sure to park only in spaces that say "V"
