Yale University is a prestigious Ivy League school located in historic New Haven, Connecticut. Yale is internationally recognized for its excellence in academics, research, and teaching. Yale is especially well known for its Law School (and undergraduate Political Science program) as well as its School of Drama.
Something unique about Yale is that all first-year students are assigned to one of fourteen residential colleges, which they stay connected to throughout their four years in college. This creates an intimate, small-school feel within the larger university.
Yale also has a long list of impressive alumni, including five U.S. Presidents, several Supreme Court Justices, and many famous actors like Meryl Streep, Angela Bassett and Frances McDormand.
Frisbee is a popular pastime on college campuses, but did you know that the origins of the game can be traced back to Yale in the 19th century? Yale students would toss around empty pie tins from the Frisbie Pie Company in Bridgeport, Connecticut for fun. This pastime evolved into what we now know as the modern Frisbee!

Different people have different ideas about what makes a "good" school. Admissions difficulty and admitted student statistics can give you a sense of how competitive a college is, but they don't say much about the quality of the education or the student experience. There are a few statistics that can give you a good idea of how satisfied students are and how well a school supports its students.
Let's take a look at each of these factors to get a clearer sense of what Yale offers and if it might be the right college for you.
It is extremely difficult to get into Yale. Yale admitted 7% of all applicants in 2021. In 2021, just 2,299 out of the 34,860 students who applied were accepted.
Retention is the number of students that stay enrolled at a school over time. This is a way to get a sense of how satisfied students are with their school experience, and if they have the support necessary to succeed in college.
Out of all the first-year, full-time undergrads who start at Yale, around 65% come back the next year. Yale's six-year graduation rate for undergrads is 96%. The average six-year graduation rate for U.S. colleges and universities is 61% for public schools, and 67% for private, non-profit schools.
Job placement statistics for recent graduates can give you a sense of the return on investment a school offers.

An endowment is the total value of a school's investments, donations, and assets. Endowment is not necessarily an indicator of the quality of a school, but it can give you a sense of how much money a college can afford to invest in expanding programs, improving facilities, and support students. Yale's endowment was valued at $31.1 billion in 2021, compared to a national average of $905 million. The school spends $59,736 for each full-time student enrolled.
Cost is another important factor when choose a college. Some colleges may have high tuition, but do a better job at meeting students' financial need. Yale meets 100% of the demonstrated financial need for undergraduates. The average financial aid package for a full-time, first-year student is around $61,407 a year.
In 2020, students graduated with an average of $14,884 in student loans for each student with debt. For context, compare this number with the average national debt, which is around $36,000 per borrower.
